Top 3 Questions about the Swedish Massage are Answered by Wimberley Day Spa.

What is a Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is the most common type of massage at the spa. Swedish massage combines various hands-on techniques including gliding, kneading, and cross-fiber friction to break up muscle knots, called adhesions. Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology as opposed to energy work. It can be slow and gentle, or vigorous and bracing, depending on what the therapist wants to achieve. Swedish massage is performed by a trained and licensed massage therapist who lubricates the skin with massage oil and usually takes 50 to 60 minutes to massage the whole body.

What does a Swedish Massage Feel Like?

Swedish massage should feel very soothing and relaxing and is perfect for beginners.

Massage therapists use a combination of classic Swedish massage strokes to work the muscle tissue. Smooth, gliding strokes, called “effleurage,” warm up the muscle tissue. It can be done slowly or quickly, depending on the therapist. In general, a slower pace is more relaxing and quicker is more invigorating. Kneading the muscle tissue by lifting and pulling the fleshy muscle away from the skeletal structure is called “petrissage.” This starts to work the tissue a bit more deeply. Cross-fiber friction is when the therapist targets a particular trouble spot (called an “adhesion”) to separate the tissues, restore circulation and make the muscle softer and more pliable. They might use their thumb or fingers…or sometimes even an elbow (the most intense). Cross-fiber friction might feel uncomfortable or good, depending on how much pressure the therapist uses and how you interpret the sensation. Some therapists also use passive stretching, such as moving your arm over your head to mobilize the joint.

What are the Health Benefits of a Swedish Massage?

Massage has many important health benefits. In fact, massage can help you maintain physical, mental and emotional well being, especially when it is part of your regular wellness routine.

Jurlique Organic Facial 2

You may merely enjoy the pampering and relaxation you feel when receiving a facial treatment at the Wimberley Day Spa at the Blair House Inn, but there are a multitude of other benefits that offer you and your skin health and wellness.

Facials, face packs, aromatherapy facials and massage with facial creams and other remedies help deep cleanse the skin, removing toxins caused by pollution, grease and dirt found in your everyday environment. Cleansing facials open the pores of the skin, remove dead skin and toxins from the face, and clean the surface of the skin through exfoliation that tightens and firms the skin,

Facial treatments help to improve and restore circulation to facial skin layers, increasing the flow of oxygen-enriched blood to skin cells, according to the Day Spas website. This rush of blood to the skin gives your skin a healthy glow and plumps skin cells with vital nutrients and water, which reduce the appearance of wrinkled and dry skin. Nutrients like blood, vitamins and minerals found in the blood, along with adequate hydration, help develop and maintain new skin cells, essential for a youthful, healthy appearance.

Facial treatments feel good, offering soothing relaxation, according to Day Spas. Facial massage treatments increase circulation and the flow of blood, and they include a variety of creams, aromatherapy and oils that moisturize the skin, smell good, and relieve stress as well as encourage peace of mind and contentment. Call us today to schedule your Botanical Facial or Acupressure Botanical Facial and feel the benefits for yourself.

10 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Massage

The Wimberley Day Spa at Blair House Inn offers a variety of massage services at our newly remodeled spa located on our beautiful Hill Country property. Listed below are some tips on how the most out of your massage.

Ten Tips to Get the Most from Your Massage

1. Be as receptive and open to the massage process as possible.

2. Don’t eat just before a massage session. Let your body digest your meal first.

3. Be on time. If you arrive in a frenzied, rushed state, it may take longer to relax.

4. Take off only as much clothing as you are comfortable removing. If you don’t want to remove your clothing, wear clothing that will be comfortable during the massage and will allow the massage therapist to touch and move the areas of your body you expect will need to be massaged.

5. Communicate with your massage therapist.

• Before the session, give accurate health information and let the massage therapist know your expectations and reasons for the massage.

• Allergies to Oils, Lotions, and Creams – The therapist may use oil, lotion or creams to reduce friction on your skin. If you are allergic to any oils, lotions or creams, tell your massage therapist, who can choose a substitute.

• During the massage session, report any discomfort, whether it’s from the massage or due to any problems or distractions related to the environment, e.g., room temperature, music volume, lighting, etc.

• Give feedback to the massage therapist during the massage on the amount of pressure, speed of hand movement, etc. If anything happens that you dislike, you have the right to ask the massage therapist to stop. If necessary, you also have the right to end the session.

• Don’t be afraid to discuss any apprehensions or concerns. It’s important that you be as comfortable as possible during your massage. Your massage therapist is a professional dedicated to do his or her best to help you feel at ease.

6. Remember to breathe normally. Breathing helps facilitate relaxation. People often stop or limit their breathing when they feel anxious or a sensitive area is massaged.

7. Relax your muscles and your mind. Tightening up by contracting or hardening your muscles during the massage is counterproductive. Let your massage therapist know this is happening. They may need to adjust the massage technique they use and may also be able to help you relax the affected area. If you find your thoughts are racing during the massage, one way to be more body-centered and to quiet your mind is to follow the hands of the massage therapist and focus on how the touch feels.

8. Drink extra water after your massage.

9. Don’t get up too quickly and do allow for some open, quiet time after your massage session. It also may take a little time to integrate or absorb the results of the massage session.

10. Be prepared to schedule several massage sessions. Massage has its greatest benefits over time. The therapeutic effects of massage are cumulative, so the more often you get a massage, the better you will feel and the more quickly your body will respond.
